Food fraud: real or unknown?

PAST EVENT

Companies and consumers are regularly confronted with reports about food fraud / authenticity. The most famous food scandals in recent years are probably the horse meat affair, fipronil crisis, .... Because of such incidents, consumer confidence is under pressure, but it also costs companies a lot of money.

In response to these crisis, the government (EU level) the legislation was amended legislation, and the EU Food Fraud Network and the Food Fraud Knowledge Center was established. Furthermore, food companies are obliged to determine the vulnerability to food fraud for raw materials and their processes and develop mitigation plans to reduce the risks for fraud. This way food fraud assessment is included in the current quality systems. Several tools are available to perform such analysis and these will be discussed during the training. According to Regulation (EU) 2017/625 the competent authorities have to carry out regular official controls, on the basis of the risk and with an appropriate frequency. Such controls should therefore be supported by reliable analytical methods. In recent years, substantial investments have been made in the development of new analytical methods to efficiently detect food fraud. An overview of the available methodology will be also discussed during the training.
